CASUAL RACING

Ken and the boys came in and had a grand good time last Saturday

It was the birthday of his son .......and so he and 3 of his friends came in to show each other how to drive the V8's and so the results are below

Above the boys hammered the V8's around Sandown with Luke puting them all away by 6 seconds with a fastest lap of 1 min 13.65 - He maintained a great consistency with pole position twice and he led the most laps excpet for when he had a disagrrement with Zak on lap 5 of Heat 2 but then he rose !!! For Mathias he put in a good 2nd Place with some reasonable laps but just lost it a couple of times on turn 3 and the other spot on the podium was Zak with 3rd and he also scored a lap of 1.1389 just 3 tenths off Luke and Tamas brought up the rear with 4th place struggling to the end but finished

TROPHIES

Below is a format of trophy that has been used and presented for the racenight drivers who win a series or round - it is a number plate style prize designed and is a great quality to hang on the drivers wall. Pictures are below of the each one used so far. Below is a look at one that was used for the GT Legends Championship and one for the V8 Supercar Championship. These are not really the ones used now but whatever will be used will look as good....or something like this ....

Above is a sample of two of the trophies exclusive to RaceNutz
ARE YOU GOOD ENOUGH TO GO THE DISTANCE ??

Currently this is a prize given for the round winner ...a coffee mug below

Each mug is made of Ceramic
and has the Australian Flag and
RaceNutz Driver of the Day and
his name on it with the race code

Common used terms in Motoracing at RaceNutz RaceNights

Areodynamics

As applied to racing . the study of the interaction between air and the resistance and pressures created by a moving car passing through the air

Air pressure

The amount of air ( measured in pounds per cubic inch ) in a tyre , a critical component in the setup of a racecar

Alternating red and yellow striped flag

Signals that oil, water, or some other substance on the track has made the surface slippery

Back straight

The straightaway opposite the start - finish line located between turns 2 and 3 on an oval track, also known as the " back stretch "

Banking

A track's angle , measured from 0 degrees for a completely flat surfaceto 36 degrees for the most severe banking in the turns of some super speedways ...

Behind the wall

The area along the pit road that is located on the infield side of the small concrete wall adjacent to the pit boxes..

Black Flag

A flag waved at a specific car , either for a penalty or a mechanical problem , advising the driver that he or she must pit on the next lap and follow the instructions of the race officials.

Black Flag with White Cross

Signals that the driver has been disqualified from the event

Blue Flag with yellow diagonal Stripe

The " passing flag " signaling slower cars to yield to faster traffic

Braking Traces

Computer-generated data that provides the driver and the team with information as to when and how hard a driver pushed the brakes at given points around the track

Caution

A track condition , signaled by a yellow flag and/or light , that indicates trouble somewhere on the track. Drivers must slow down , not pass other cars , and follow a pace car during caution.

Chassis

The car frame or central body of the car - Also sometimes called " The tub "

Chequered Flag

The flag indicating the end of a practice session , qualification attempt , or end of the race. At the end of the race , the chequered flag is first waved at the winner of the race.

Closed-Cockpit car

A racecar with a roof over the head of the driver

Crew

Members of a race team who work on the car , either in the shop or at the track during a race weekend

Crew Chief

The day to day manager of the race team who oversees the mechanics and all other personell and crew. The crew cheif , and in some cases the engineer , is the drivers primary contact, the person to whom the driver must relay all information about how the car is handling and feeling.

Differential

An axle gear assembly that regulates torque to each of the rear wheels.

Downforce

The downward pressure on the car created by air passing over the chassis and causing the car to grip the surface of the track. It keeps the car on the track. The wings of the car force it to stay on the ground , acting in a manner opposite to the wings on an airplane.

Draughting

A driver maneuver in which one or more cars line up single file behind the lead car , thus lengthening the airflow over the line of cars and cutting down on drag. Draughting allows the cars trailing the lead car to go faster using less horsepower. In a two car situation , the lead car must accelerate to go fast. The second car can come out of the draft and slingshot past the first car with less acceleration. Drafting is also a common practice in cycling.

Drag

The resistance formed by the car passing through the air and creating turbulence around and behind it.

Front Stretch

The straight section of the racetrack where the start-finish line is located

G-Force

Gravitational force created by the high speed of the car as it makes turns on the track

Go-Kart

A small open-wheel racecar, typically with an engine and a frame but very little bodywork , used for entry-level as well as professional racing.

Green Flag

Signals the start of the practice session , qualification attempt , or race, and all restarts after a caution or red flag

Grip

Describes how well the tyres maintain traction on the racing surface

Groove ( or line )

The path around the track where cars run the fastest and handle the best. The groove of a track can shift several times during a race as conditions change. Often most drivers will use the same groove around the racetrack:that portionof the track will consequently appear darker due to the build up of tyre rubber.

Handling

A race car's on track performance , determined by tyre and suspension setup and other areodynamics factors

Horsepower ( hp ) ( hsp )

A measurement of engine power

Lap ( Noun )

One time around the track

Lap ( Verb )

as in when a driver is " lapped "

Lapped

Being passed by another car so that it becomes one lap ahead

Lap time

The time it takes for a car to make one lap, measured to the thousandth of a second.

Line -

See " Groove "

Marbles

Excessive rubber buildup above the groove of the track, the result of normal tyre wear throughout a race

Midget car

An open wheel racecar often raced on dirt tracks.

Nose

The front of a car.

Open cockpit car

A racecar without a roof

Open-wheel racing

Racing with cars that do not have fenders

Oversteer

A condition where the rear end of the car is unstable due to lack of rear tyre grip, also known as " loose "

Pit Box

Area along the pit road just outside the pit wall where the car stops during pit stops

Pit Crew

Seven members of the team designated to go into the pit box during a pit stop to work on the car

Pit Road or lane

The road connecting the track to the designated pit box area, usually located parallel to the front stretch.

Pit Stall

Area behind the wall of the pit box where the tyres and other equipment are kept and where the pit crew is stationed between pit stops.

Pit Stop

Car's leaving the racetrack for service in the pit box

Pit Wall

The small concrete wall seperating the pit box from the pit stall

Podium

The Stand or area where the top three drivers are presented with their trophies and presentations at the end of the race

Points

Numerical values assigned by RaceNutz Media for wins , pole positions , finishing place and leading the most laps and also to those drivers other then the winner who finish the race on the lead lap. This incentive is to give each driver a reason to keep going in a race after either crashing or losing time in a situation that was unexpected. This numeric system determines the year or series end champion.

Pole

The inside , front-row starting position , awarded to the car with the fastest qualifying time

Racing suit

Fireproof suit worn by drivers anytime they are in the car.

Red Flag

The flag that tells all drivers to stop their cars at the end of the current lap: often brought out for serious accidents and rain

Red Flag with yellow " X "

Signal that the pit area is closed

Restart

The first green-flag lap after a caution: critical strategic period for a team as most of the cars are close together and positions can be gained or lost depending on how aggressively the driver attacks the restart.

Road Courses

Non oval tracks with various turns , configurations and elevation changes. The courses are normally an allocated piece of road used and maintained specifically for racing cars , karts and production events.

RPM'S

Engine revolutions per minute

Series

The Races sanctioned by a specific racing organisation during a calendar year

Setup

The preparation of the car for a race including , but not limited to, the aerodynamics package , chassis position , stiffness of shocks and springs , and air pressure in the tyres.

Side pod

Bodywork on the side of the chassis covering the radiators. Aids in engine cooling , car areodynamics , and the driver protection in the event of a side impact.

Speed traces

Computer - generated data that provides the driver and the teams with acceleration and deceleration information at various points on the track

Sponsors

Corporations and other entities that pay a team or driver money to have their logos and identities associated with them.

Spotter

The team member who watches the race from a perch above the track and radios to the driver when and where traffic is located , where to go to avoid an accident , or when the track has gone yellow or is about to go green.

Street Circuit

A special series that involves a city or captial that arranges the used streets of the city to be closed down and transferred into race lines and fencing to abide by safety standards and usually these courses are directed through major city landmarks and buildings which attract tourists. Street circuits are only used on average for about 4 days of the year to allow for practice , qualifying and racing of the main event along with support racing prior to the above allocations.

Suspension

Shock absorbers and springs , similar to those on a regular car , but which are adjustable to smooth out bumps on the track and to maintain grip.

Sway Bars

The bars that couple the suspensions on each side of the racecar to try to compress the springs on both sides of the car equally.

Team

All the employees and staff of a race oragnisation assigned to a particular car

Team Manager

The big picture manager inside a racing shop who handles everything from ordering parts to hiring and firing of personnel and co-ordinating test dates and times. He also co-operates with sponsors and charities to arrange visits and driver appearances.

Understeer

Condition in which the car does not want to turn in the corners due to a lack of tyre grip. This is also known as "pushing" of "tight" and in Australia it is called "understeer" and "oversteer".

White Flag

Indicates to the driver when displayed that their is just one lap to go and that the race will end with the chequered flag on the next lap.

White Flag with Red Cross

Signal that an ambulance is on the courseor that medical help is needed and all drivers need to be aware of this happening during a race or a yellow flag period.

White Line

A line on the inside of an oval track marking an area that should not be crossed during the race, except for entering and exiting pit road or in the event the car needs to slow down dramatically. This rule does not apply in the case of an accident ahead where a driver behind may have to use pit road or an exit road even at high speed to avoild an accident ahead - this is considered acceptable if it means avoiding possible injury.

Wings

Aerodynamics fixtures generally on the front or rear of the car that help increase the downforce of the car.

Yellow Flag

The caution flag that indicates trouble somewhere on the track. Drivers must slow down, maintain position , and yield to safety vehicles until the green flag is displayed. During a qualification session, a qualification attempt is halted.

Each round will consist of 3 Heats of 35 to 40 mins each approx - this will be worked out on a time basis and also to suit an average lap of the track - it will be held Monday nights at 6.30 p.m with an estimation race time of approx 2 and 1/2 hours - Any protests maybe entered straight after the heat and action maybe taken at that point by way of penalties - All Heats have NO allocated pit stops and it is up to the driver and his crew cheif to calculate the need for a stop and if they intend to use for example a softer tyre and go for a stop as compared to a hard tyre and no stops..but the best advice is for the driver to go out and do some hot laps and check the fuel usage on a hot lap and then times this by the number of laps and then check the total amount that the car will hold in fuel and see if you can go the distance at high speed - Because these are timed races this will mean you will need to check your times against the total and work out your pit strategy if any ? If you are on what you think is the last lap just check the time above and if it says there is 40 seconds to go then that could be the last lap but this will depend if you are the leader and if not then this may end the race..so be prepared ? Also there will be one night race round in this series with all of the heats raced during the nightime ? So practice this ? This will mean headlights on and if you have a crash and break your lights you will be in trouble !

Also make sure you compare each car with others as gear settings , diff ratios and power settings can make a big difference to the fuel economy. And you will find some cars slightly slower then others but they may have much better fuel economy so this you have to weigh up in your choice of cars ?

Reverse grid - All driver will start off the green light and remain in 2nd Gear and form a line on the left and the race director will call each driver into position. The leading driver ( that is the last place driver from the previous race ) will then be instructed to lead the field around to the start/ Finish line at which point the race will start on a rolling start ...no other driver can pass the leader before the finish line which is lap 2 of the race....at the point of the start / finish line the leader will then accelerate and the race is on ...any driver caught passing another on the pace lap will be black flagged . The above does not apply to Heat one - it is a standing start with proper qualifying laps individual where each driver will qualify individual on track over a 10 min period.

What happened ? Round 1 at Hockenheim

The first round of the series held at Hockenheim in Germany was a great success as two rookie drivers in Martin Szilvassy and Mark Symon made their debuts and proved that they could go the distance in three heats and whilst they struggled with some tyre issues and a few pit stop problems they made their mark being an attitude of becoming " Real RaceNight Drivers " and both scored podiums driving the Nissan and the Porsche. Race 1 had Mark qualify on pole pipping Nissan Driver Martin by just 2 hundreds of a second and third was Darryn Huxham just 4 tenths behind with Matt Carter 2 secs slower but in the Porsche and lower on power but his plan to go the distance without a pit stop was a winner and caught every driver sleeping as with a 40 min race on timed circumstances this worked out to be approx 22 to 24 laps and so strategy meant everything and this strategy by Carter was the key to 3 heats wins of 20 points each and a demolition of the opposition. " If only Montgomery was here so I could put him away and teach him a lesson ! " said Carter who was disappointed that he could not throw this strategy towards a driver who has beat him many times in this way before ? ....But Darryn Huxham who put in 3 hours of practice with his crew yesterday were really happy with their drivers performance as he snapped a podium and a third place overall...Huxham blew up his Nissan on Heat one and had to come back to glory in the next two but proved he has what it takes to keep focused and his attitude showed through to set an example to the two rookies and their performance also showed up well as they kept with their strategies all the way through. Heat one for Szilvassy gave him a good start and he led a number of laps before making his first stop where he gave the lead to Symon who then made an error on his pit stop and oveerstood the mark and hit the wrong button cutting his engine and losing 30 seconds in the pits as a result. Carter then had a 50 second lead on Szilvassy and he was losing about 1.5 seconds per lap in the next 13 but they were no threat to the porsche that finished with 4 ltrs left in the tank and no stop which gave him a great advantage. Anthony Basille had a terrible day crashing his Ferrari on lap 3 and with damage looming the crew were unable to fix his car and he retired on lap 10 of 22. In Heat two with reverse Grid Basille led them away and he lost 4 positions over the next 5 laps before cutting his engine in the pits on lap 17 and his day was done ...Carter continued his 1 min 47sec laps consistent and Huxham did well to keep pressure on Symon who eventually lost all tyre wear and fell a lap down and finished 4th with Huxham obtaining third place on the podium to go with his rookie win at Surfers Paradise last week in Australia. Szilvassy finished 2nd and scored a valuable 19 points and has set himself up to take the lead next week as Carter announced that he had no sponsorship for next week's round in Birmingham U.K next Monday. But it was Carter again and with hard tyres and this strategy will be certainly used by other drivers in the rounds to come. However being that the Porsche is good on fuel each driver can only race this twice and so the presure will be on to eventually do that pit stop. In Heat 3 Carter again took the Gold Medal and finishing with the Silver was Huxham and a well earned 18 points with Szilvassy scoring the bronze. . Basille got a fourth after a slight comeback in the Ferrari and Mark Symon brought up the wooden spoon after running out of fuel on the last lap .....Fastest lap was Mark with a 1 min 44 and his name is now on the board ...So the championship now has Matt Carter in front on 60 and Martin Szilvassy 2nd and his start is looking good for a lead next week in England.

What happened ? Round 2 at Birmingham Round

Things changed much in England last night as the test of driving amongst concrete canyons at high speed with real accuracy was the challenge and especially at night. With one touch up on the barriers headlights were a loss factor and so the pressure was on to maintain consistency and still finish on the lead lap delivery that one valuable bonus point that could mean much later on in the championship. Darryn Huxham seemed comfortable in the Ferrari and qualified well and it took him the first heat to mild to conditions after leading a few laps and then in Heat 2 he took advantage and lead virtually every lap to record his first heat win in this championship after Heat one winner James McLaren had an argument with the wall on turn 2 on lap one of heat 2 ? With reverse grid the issue in both heats 2 and 3 this was the opportunity for new rookie Lewis Hawthorne to shine but a few nerves and lack of laps and experience took it's toll on the Hoon who appeared to struggle with cold tyres but eventually came to terms by snaring a forth in Heat 3. Heat one saw him last 4 laps and a DNF and Heat 2 was a last place but car control was his hope to hold the fort and time will be his best friend as he was thrown into a street circuit and at night race first up with no experience and he will be only the better for it. Martin Szilvassy pitted on lap 12 of Heat one for tyres and a 53.6 sec pit stop with a slight piece of damage and he dropped to 3rd place. But a good recovery in the 2nd half of 11 laps saw some consistent lap times of around 1 min 34 's and this gave him 19 points with the bonus. He is proving to be the quiet achiever and now leads the championship by 7 and with the U.S.A next week he has a chance to secure a great position. Huxham had two punctures in Heat 3 and this caused him a last place but overall he gained a win with two podiums. It will be interesting to see what car he drives at Toban a circuit next week with many off camber curves and hills. Mark Symon had a bad night with what seemed a slow car and during the break of heats two and three he asked Lamborghini to replace his steering system as he was unhappy with the module and this caused a delay but well worth it as his test of the new product was much more satisfactory bringing a smile to the Kiwi who laughed off suggestions he was taking it easy in Heat 3 when he could not improve his fastest lap ...RaceNutz Media thinks there may of been a bit of cigarette sponsorship business going on here and rumours have it that he may be announcing a big deal soon in a new sponsor. James McLaren was determined in Heat 3 to hammer the opposition and this he did with relentless form posting a classic lap record of 1 min 31 smashing the current lap record at RaceNutz held by him in a Nissan R34 Road car from earlier this year. Next week is the trip to the United States where the track " Toban " is like a mini Nurburgring and Bathurst all in one ! With off camber curves and hills along with some wide off turns leading into fast esses this will be a very exciting race...RaceNutz Media has been informed that Ian Manning will race his first round here to fill in for Mark Symon as history has shown that he was the only driver to put away James McLaren here nearly one year ago and he will be out to impress various teams as this is a track he loves and seems to excel into form here...Depending on who decides to show up Manning is determined to do well and has also put out the challenge to long term rival Darryn Montgomery to turn up and show his worth on Manning's 2nd favourite race track. Can Manning stop Szilvassy from winning his first Heat ? Will Montgomery answer the challenge and take on the boastful Manning ? Will James McLaren decide to show and see if he is up to the challenge to be beaten again ? Will Huxham choose the right car and make up the points to threaten Szilvassy for the championship lead ? All these questions will be answered next Monday night at 6.30 p.m ..remember first in for the seat will be best dressed with no excuses !
